Why “Too Much” Is Exactly Enough
The Spark That Scares Us
Most of us have been told to hold back. “You’re too loud.” “Too emotional.” “Too much.” Those words echo in our heads, shaping how we show up. But what if “too much” wasn’t a warning — what if it was an invitation?
Growth doesn’t happen in restraint. It happens when you step onto your stage — whatever your stage may be — and dare to go further than you thought possible.
Shadows of Smallness
We shrink because somewhere along the way, environments taught us that our voice was dangerous.
A classroom where speaking up meant being laughed at.
A workplace where bold ideas were dismissed as “unrealistic.”
A family dynamic where emotions were labeled “too much.”
These moments condition us to believe that smallness equals safety. But here’s the danger: when we carry that smallness into our present relationships and responsibilities, we rob ourselves — and others — of the clarity, influence, and connection we’re capable of. Playing small may feel safe, but it keeps us invisible. And invisibility is the enemy of impact.
The Stage Where Magic Lives
As a director, I’ve seen performers discover magic only after they’ve crossed the line of “too much.” Rarely do they actually go too far. Instead, they find new territory: a place where insecurity turns into confidence, fear into freedom, and discomfort into transformation.
That same principle applies to communication. Whether you’re promoting an idea, leading a team, or sharing your passion, the stage is not the place to shrink. It’s the place to expand. To be bold. To challenge the belief that the communicator you are today is the only communicator you’re allowed to be.
Dare the Line, Cross It Anyway
Here’s how you can practice “going too far” in your own communication:
Spot the shrink‑point. Where do you usually pull back? A meeting? A pitch? A conversation?
Push past in rehearsal. Say it louder, add more detail, lean into emotion.
Harvest the breakthrough. Notice the new clarity, energy, or resonance that emerges.
This isn’t about recklessness. It’s about discovering the intentional communicator inside you — the one who’s been waiting to take up space.
The Future Self Waiting in the Wings
Imagine yourself stepping into a meeting, a conversation, or a presentation with the confidence to be fully seen. Imagine your ideas landing with weight, your passion sparking action, your presence commanding attention.
Now imagine the relief of knowing communication doesn’t have to be hard. You don’t have to guess where the line is — you just have to cross it, and let growth happen.
Permission to Be “Too Much”
The communicator you are today is not the limit. You are allowed to be more. To be bigger. To be “too much.”
My book, ACTive Communication: How to Command Any Audience in Your Business and Your Life! was written to give you the tools, the security, and the hope to make that leap. It’s your guide to dismantling fear, reframing communication, and stepping into the influence you’ve always wanted.
